In The Bronx Brown Girls Can See Stars Too
(or Fuck Is You Lookin’ At)
I had the absolute honor of portraying Gabriella, the head teaching artist at a community center for “troubled” teen girls in the Bronx.
As a “brown girl” from The Bronx, I ran to audition for what became a true masterpiece. Doing theatre in NYC, I found it quite rare to work with people that are actually from NYC. Throughout my career in NYC theater, I found that I would rarely work with NYC natives. In most cases not only would I be the only NYC native but also the only Black/Latino person on stage. Amalia Oliva Rojas wrote this play about a borough that is underrepresented and misunderstood did an amazing job at humanizing a people that is typically swept aside and stereotyped. The beauty in this play is that it resonates with all audiences regardless of background or upbringing. It was beautiful to hear the accents I grew up with being celebrated and applauded on stage, it truly made my heart sing.
